The Iron Canyon trial is one of the most popular trails in Park City and for good reason. It is very accessible from SR224 and you can get to the bench that overlooks downtown PC in about 30-40 minutes. Although the hike is only 2 miles round trip, it is fairly steep gaining about 900 feet.
I have hiked and skinned up Iron Canyon many times with my wife, my kids and my dog but by far the most fun I have had on this trial is “butt sledding” as my sister in law, Susan, calls it. I don’t think you ever grow out of enjoying sledding so I naturally said, “yes”. I was under the impression that we would hike up about 50 yards and sled down and do that a few times before calling it a day but that was far from the case. Susan's friend, Amanda, was a butt sledding veteran and marched us up the hill and once we got to the top, she demonstrated the precise form to maximize speed. I quickly realized that Amanda was a butt sledding pro and if it was a winter Olympic sport – she would definitely be a gold medalist. Amanda was halfway down the hill before Susan and I tried to emulate her style but we were not nearly as graceful. We would gain too much speed and fall over or we would put our feet in front of us to slow down which would result in snow shooting in our face. But our incompetency only led to more laughter. I could hear Susan’s persistent chuckling well before I could see her which inspired more laughing. When we finally got to the bottom, Amanda was dry and relaxed and Susan and I looked like we got tumbled in an avalanche. I had such a good time that I decided to buy a few sleds for my family this upcoming Christmas as everyone needs to be a kid again.
